Review: So Gong Dong Tofu House

So Gong Dong Tofu House is a mid-sized Korean spot located in Palo Alto, CA. This spot serves… a combination of tofu soups and dishes. Jen found this place online and we decided to give it a try. Here’s how it went!

Warning: This place means business when they say it’s spicy!

Location

This cute spot is located a quick drive from the bustling downtown area of Palo Alto. There is adequate street parking and there is a large parking lot in front of the restaurant.

Food

Nice Banchan Starters

Jen had a mild seafood combination tofu soup and I had the spicy dumpling tofu soup. You can choose from 4 spice levels: mild, medium, spicy, hot. I grew up eating a lot of spicy food and my spice tolerance is pretty high, but to keep it safe I always get only spicy during my first time.

Really Spicy Tofu Soup, Utterly Delicious

Once seated, it took a little of time before we were served our banchan(small side dishes) which included pickled cucumbers, kimchi, and seaweed. We were also given mixed rice. Shortly after, our pipping hot, bubbling bowls of tofu were brought out.

The tofu soup was absolutely freaking spicy. With a really high spice tolerance I typically order extra spicy tofu soup at my usual spots, but this time spicy was already killing me. Dare I say it? The spice level was actually the first time I have been challenged in a very long time.

Final Thoughts

For a quick dinner spot to satisfy your Tofu Soup cravings, this is the perfect spot. So Gong Dong or SDG Tofu House is a perfect spot to grab a quick homestyle Korean meal. The tofu soup is served bubbling hot, complete with a spice level that packs a hefty punch. This spot is Calvin and Jen approved and I would definitely recommend checking them out.
