Earning Miles at Home during Covid-19?

A short guide to earning miles without leaving leaving your home. Perfect for those under shelter-in-place.

With the United States economy coming to a roaring halt and various shelter-in-place orders, here are 3 thoughtful ways to earn or churn to earn miles and points during this time.

1)Buy Essential Supplies using a Shopping Portal and United’s MPX

While many stores have empty shelves, you can still purchase pasta and other non perishables online. Each store has varying rules on cashback, but there are plenty of opportunities to earn points using a shopping portal or United’s MPX app. United’s MPX app allows you to earn miles for purchasing gift cards, which you would then use to make your purchase. Be sure to only purchase the amount of gift cards needed to complete your purchase and to avoid speculatively holding these gift cards.

2) Identify Items for Future Retail Arbitrage

While I would refrain from stocking up on essentials and other health related products, there are plenty of sites currently running promotions and deals. With the extra time at home, you can browse and identify items to flip. I would suggests looking at smaller store brands or mom and pop shops that have an online store. Most of the smaller stores are running massive discounts to clear out inventory and inject cash into their business. Not only would you be potentially earning a massive amount of points, you will also be supporting small businesses.

3) Try Out Local Restaurants by Ordering Takeout

Being stuck at home doesn’t mean you can’t help support local restaurants. With all spots doing take out only, it is still a wonderful time to support local spots. If you prefer to have your food delivered, many apps are offering free delivery and several cash back sites like Rakuten will offer cash back for food orders.
