Hyatt’s ultra luxury property the Park Hyatt Sydney gets all the attention, and rightfully so as it sits across the harbor from the famous Sydney Opera house. On the flip side, located right by booming Darling Harbor sits the Hyatt Regency Sydney. Opened in 2016 after some major renovations to what was previous a Sheraton hotel, The Hyatt Regency Sydney is a fantastic deal in an ideal location of town! Here’s my full review.
Booking

The Hyatt Regency Sydney is a Category 4 hotel with award rates ranging from 12,000 to 18,000 points per night. Subsequently room rates were under $200 a night. We used a combination of both as Jen and I stayed here for 5 nights, spent 3 nights in Melbourne before spending our last 5 nights at this property. All in All, the Globalist perks and ideal location make this hotel an affordable alternative to the Park Hyatt.
Location
The hotel is located near Darling Harbor with fantastic views of the HMAS Vampire if you have a harbor view room. Darling Harbor is also home to an aquarium, a smaller zoo, and a plethora of dining options along the wharf. Just a quick walk south, and you can get to Tumbalong Park, Chinatown, or any of the bustling shopping areas. There is basically an unlimited number of dining options within walking distance. For those looking to leverage public transport, the city train is just a few blocks away or you can a boat ride at Darling Harbor for Taronga Zoo. The hotel is a great place for launching your Australian Adventure!
The hotel is also a short 30 minute Uber from the airport.
The Room
Jen and I had high floor king rooms on both of our stays that were vastly different from each other. The hotel is made up of two wing or blocks with one side being a tad older than the other. During our first stay, we were on the the right side of the property which had significantly slower WiFi.
Each room also had a coffee machine and an electric water kettle.
Both of our rooms were Harbor View rooms giving us great views of Darling Harbor, the nearby bridge, and the other hotels across the narrow channel. We could also view the Darling Harbor Zoo and Aquarium rooftops from our room.
Food
As a Hyatt Globalist, Jen and I received complimentary breakfast at the restaurant and the Regency Club daily. Additionally, we had access to the Regency Club for all day refreshments and Happy Hour.

During the weekends, the club serves an elevated happy hour menu which included premium offerings such as fresh oysters, sushi, and more. The club also had a variety of alcoholic drinks available. During our stay, we notices several families eating dinner with the happy hour.
Breakfast was served at the Sailmaker Restaurant on the lobby level which included a vast buffet spread and made to order egg dishes. Jen and I ate here every morning and thoroughly enjoyed the offerings. There was a large spread of Western and Asian options along with a comprehensive salad bar and cereal station. There was also a vast bakery section with honeycomb and several locally made jams.
Amenities
The hotel has a nice Regency Club with excellent views of Darling Harbor. When not serving breakfast or happy hour, the club has free drinks including coffee, tea, and sparkling water along with several snacks. The Regency Club is an excellent place to catch a quick afternoon coffee or get some work done. Wifi from the club is fast and the club tends to be empty after breakfast until 3pm.

The hotel also has a small gym that includes a several cardio machines, a few weight machines, and a bench with dumbbells up to 60 pounds or their KG equivalent. The gym also faces the harbor so you can get a great view while running on the treadmill. Additionally, there is a few medicine balls an yoga mats. While the gym is on the smaller end for a Hyatt Regency, the equipment was in great shape and it never got crowded.
Final Thoughts
The Hyatt Regency Sydney offers excellent value compared to the ultra-luxury Park Hyatt, combining a prime Darling Harbor location with affordable rates and strong Globalist perks. A Category 4 property with award nights from 12,000–18,000 points and cash rates often under $200, it’s an ideal base for exploring Sydney’s dining, shopping, and attractions. Harbor View rooms provide pleasant waterfront scenery, while complimentary breakfast, Regency Club access with elevated happy hours, and a well-equipped harbor-facing gym enhance the stay. Overall, it’s a practical, comfortable, and cost-effective choice for travelers looking to maximize value without sacrificing location or amenities.
